Josheph is the ex-CEO of Safaricom Limited. He has been the CEO since July 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint-venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya. Beginning November 2010, Michael retired as CEO and tock up a new role as Safaricom's Strategic Advisor. Currently, he is a member of the Safaricom Board and other Vodafone affiliates. Effective December 2010, he was appointed Chairman of the Kenya Tourism Board for a period of three years. He is also a World Bank Fellow appointed March 2011 to advise Governments, Regulators and other institutions on Mobile Money and other ICT initiatives.
During his tenure as CEO of Safaricom, he steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers. This phenomenal growth stradding nearly a decade was motored by the launch of many innovative products and services such as M-PESA. Michael received individual recognition for making the most outstanding contribution to mobile money through Safaricom's M-PESA at the MMT Global Awards, held in October 2010 in Dubai. He continues to be a re-known speaker in several international forums including the World Bank, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Economist and many others.
Mr Joseph has also led the evolution of Safaricom from a traditional mobile phone company into a totally integrated communications operation with an enviable fixed and mobile data service portfolio for individual, small business and corporate customers. Today, Safaricom is one of the leading companies in East Africa and the most profitable company in the region.
He has extensive international experience in company start-ups, the implementation and operation of large wireless and wire-line networks.
Mr. Joseph has a B. Sc. (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and is a member of the I.E.E.E and I.E.E (U.K.). He also has an Honorary Doctorate degree (Doctor of Letters) from Africa Nazarene University, bestowed to him in recognition of his contribution to the growth of Safaricom from very humble beginnings to becoming the most innovative, influential and profitable company in the East African region.
